The biggest threat for democracy: The enemy within
April 16th, 2007And exactly this oligarchy has now brought up something that one can only describe as “new czardom”: Vladimir Putin.
Putin, former head of the Russian secret service KGB, recruits from it most of his supporters - especially his designated heir. This fact alone should shake every democrat awake: A ruler, at least half- democratic legitimated, appoints his successor.
A lot of parties and organizations were forbidden and to create the image of democracy Putin created his own parties, one conservative, one social. Which one wins does not matter - Putin stays on the top.Even more alarming is the in the last days openly shown oppression of all opposition. All registered protests get forbidden without real reason, leaders of the opposition are arrested without indictment. It’s easy to see where this track is going: Putin wants to assure his power and forestall a democratic revolution like the “orange revolution” in Ukraine.
So, this is a new type of totalitarism: An invulnerable ruler that takes his legitimation unlike the former kings not from an higher instance like god, but builds his position on top of a democratic system.
And that is one of the reasons why the self-declared world police EU and USA don’t do anything: Putin was elected in a democratic election. But now he starts to dismantle the system but still holds up the image of democracy. There are still parties - that they all take orders from the same man doesn’t matter. There are still elections - that just those parties are allowed that obey to Putin is not important. The political elite of EU and USA did not jet understand what is going on in the biggest country on earth.
But that’s not all. Actually, they do not want to understand, because both are dependent on Russia. The keyword is like so often these days: Ressources. And especially the black gold: Oil. To stand up against Russia means risking “energy safety”. And that would create public discontent in the countries of EU and USA. And even more, a growing dependence on other non-democratic nations: Iran, Saudi-Arabia, Iraq, …
So the elite of EU and USA just hold still and watch, what happens in Russia. They watch how the long fought for democratic system is destroyed. We cannot allow this. If Russia falls back to a totalitarian system this won’t be a good thing for the safety of the world.
So, we’ve got a choice: Oil or democracy, Oil or what seems to have been the biggest guaranty for peace. I think, the decision is easy.
Could Ahmadinejad really be THAT stupid?
April 7th, 2007[en]Ok, he captured 14 British servicemen and one woman. Why should he? To provoke? He got nothing from doing this. So, what could bring him to such a step?
Well, let’s start with some other facts. So, to become the leader of a country you need a) money b) a dad or you have to be somewhat smart. So, when Ahmadinejad made his way he had neither a nor b, so he has to be somewhat intelligent.
So let’s go on with what happened for sure: Some Iranian boats somwhere in the Ocean captured these 15 Britons. One side says it was in Iraqi waters, the other says it was in Iranian waters. So, there is no neutral position that we could refer to. But if you look at the arabian media - they are not sure but are more likely to believe the Iranan version. If you watch the “western” media, it is always stated as fact, that it took place in Iraqi waters. So this makes Iran the bad guy.
Well, but what made me think are the following words that the British servicemen said on a press conference shortly after their release, but not short enough so that they were briefed a whole day before they said:
We were blindfolded, our hands were bound, we were forced up against the wall. Throughout our ordeal we faced constant psychological pressure.
Later, we were stripped and dressed in pyjamas. The next few nights were spent in stone cells approximately 8ft by 6ft, sleeping on piles of blankets.
(Lieutnant Felix Carman)We had a blindfold and plastic cuffs, hands behind our backs, heads against the wall. Basically there were weapons cocking. Someone, I’m not sure who, someone said, I quote, ‘lads, lads I think we’re going to get executed’.
After that comment, someone was sick and as far as I was concerned he had just had his throat cut.
From there we were rushed to a room, quick photo and then stuffed into a cell and didn’t see or speak to anyone for six days.
(Royal Marine Joe Tindell)
Despite the contradiction (Carman says they were questioned every night, Tindell that they “didn’t see or speak to anyone for six days”) that’s somewhat ugly:
Just imagine you’re Ahmadinejad. You’re used to causing trouble, making big bad statements and you just caught some of your opponents. So, would you really go so far to treat them like that?
Ahmadinejad must have thought about releasing them earlier, and he must have not that he could not kill them - that would cause real trouble and possibly a war. And after such a provocation even Germany and France and therefore whole of Europe would take part in it.
So, he must have known, that he would have to release them someday - and that they would talk about their treatment and that this would decide the picture the whole western world would have after such a “easter gift”. So, it would not be so hard to do it, why didn’t he treat them good, giving them enough food…
Our captors set out to psychologically confuse us by keeping us alone, feeding us very little and stopping us from communicating.
(Royal Marine Captain Chris Air)What could he gain of such a procedure? Military secrets? Barely. He just caught some unimportant and low ranking soldiers. The only thing would be propaganda material. But wouldn’t it be enough to show them off in the media. To isolate them and give them wrong information would probably be enough to make them “confess” whatever is necessary for the media. Why should you treat them such badly, tying their hands and eyes, pushing them violently against the wall, give them not enough to eat and whatever else. Why? Their is no logical reason.
We found earlier that Ahmadinejad must be somewhat intelligent. So, why should an intelligent man give orders that won’t get him anything but trouble when they are freed?
Or should we ask the other way around: Their words sound very similiar. May it be that these are not their words? That they were ordered to say such things - by the British military? And could it even be that it is Britain that delivers the wrong coordinates locating the capture 1.7 nautical miles in Iraqi waters - actually why should there be a need to go so far out if their mission is to safeguard the coast from smugglers and alike?
So, remember something else: Great Britain and the USA worked strongly to create trade stops and isolate Iran. The USA send a second aircraft carrier close to Iran - a clear provocation! And why is nobody even thinking that the Iranian version of “how to use nuclear power” may be a peacefull one? Well, that’s the media. And those who control it.
Maybe we’re making a mistake. Maybe not everything is true what the soldiers said at the press conference. And maybe the bad guy is somebody else than Ahmadinejad. Or, then I’m sorry, he really is that stupid.

Iraq: Saddam is dead - What will happen now?
Januar 2nd, 2007But what happens in Iraq? In the end it plays a very minor role what some government far away of Iraw says - the Iraqis decide about it. And that the US played an important role in the trial - from the compilation of the court till the laws behind - should be forgotten as soon as possible as it won’t make anyone happy.
There are three major groups in Iraq: Shi’ites, Sunnis and Kurds. You don’t hear much from the Kurds but in connection to turkey. The Shi’ites are the majority in Iraq and Saddam was Sunni - you can’t wonder that there are now strong conflicts between these two groups, but this was already the case before Saddams execution. Now they became much stronger - so the question is: do the fights stay that strong or become even stronger or will they weaken and disappear? Will there maybe even be independent states?
There won’t be independent states. The Shi’ites and Sunnis are parted in special districts and cities, but in the end they’re mixed too strong. The only reasonable version would be an independent “kurdish” and an independent “islamic” state - but this won’t be possible especially if you regard turkey and lot’s of other countries with a kurdish minority. If there would be a new kurdish state the minorities in all these countries would push on their own independent state - maybe eben with violence - so, this won’t come.
If the conflict will grow stronger or weaken is hard to say. On the one side one of the figures disappeared - the Sunnis can’t push on a reappointment of Saddam as “legitim leader”. But on the other side the current outbreaks will work against the unifying process, so the “spiral of violence” could get faster - acts of “revenge” (suicide bombings, killings,…) would be the result, and the would result in new acts of revenge etc. - that’s the same with Israel and Palestine.
So: On the long term no country-splitting, on the short term no end of the fights, so just one thing remains: a long enduring civil war until someday the system will weaken or somebody finds a solution we now can’t even think of. But, with or without Saddam, there is no end of the bloodshed in sight.

Venzuelan president Hugo Chávez reelected
Dezember 4th, 2006The US- imperialism exists, who denies this is just ignoring facts (Iraq, Afghanistan, …). But Chavez is not working against it - just look at who he’s pumping the oil with: there’s e.g. Royal Dutch Shell, but also there is the US- giant Chevron.
So, Chavez is no socialist - but what is he? A democrat? No, for sure not - he thinks over changing the Venezuelan constitution to allow himself a fourth term in office. So he is close to something that some people compare to Cuba’s Fidel Castro, but he’s not jet that far. So Chavez is a mixture of socialist, capitalist and antidemocrat. And what does this mean for the world? Now, let’s compare it to China: A country that neither to the outside nor to the inside follows positions that us “western” people would call ehtical - a danger for the world peace, just like the USA - but different.
But that’s something we can’t concede to Chavez: He’s as few a danger as the third-as-big North Korea - with the difference that he has oil. And a working economy with the highest economic growth of both americas in the last year. So, what does it mean for the world? No danger, hope! Because the more states revolt against the US- hegemony the closer we get to real peace.

Japan uses Jury-system as of 2009
Dezember 1st, 2006
From 2009 on their courts will work with the Jury- System - like in the US.
Is this a reasonable decision? Sure, this is more democratic than the current professional-judge-system, but is this really better? Especially in highly emotional (e.g. child abuse) cases or those with “VIP”s or an high amount of money the citizens are for sure much more prejudiced than professionals - just think of the child abuse of Michael Jackson - it was impossible to find people that really didn’t know him (so that they were not prejudiced)… and if those they found really were not prejudiced can’t be sure - they just could have claimed they were to get him a judgment following their interests.
Maybe this is some of those “typically german” attribute, but I see the law system more threatened than improved. Not “the citizens” get more right to a say, but single individuals that have to work themselves into the matter: they have to learn the right, study the case - and especially they are much more easily led than professionals: they don’t know the tricks and dodges of the system, the rhetorical and strategical tools of the advocates - that will cause a great price- increase for those advocates that have more charismaand thinks alike than ability and knowledge - this is no improvement, but in the opposite a big danger for the impartiality.
That’s the great problem: We have to accept, that the Athens Ostracism can’t be used for our society any more - on the one side the cases are different, but also the legal position, the previous knowledge of the individuals (because the collective knowledge is highly more than at that time), the political influense and so on. No ordinary citizen can be as neutral as a professional judge - and so the democracy and impartiality of the law are in high danger.

Litwinenko is dead - and accuses Putin
November 25th, 2006In his shortly before his dead dictated farewell letter he accused Putin of the murder - a clear signal that he knew, who stood behind it. And what’s the consequence for “the west”? So, first of all Europe has to realize the “danger in the east” and act accordingly.

Why is Europe not acting against Putins rule-breaking?

Why is Europe not acting against Putins rule-breaking?
November 24th, 2006Outside pressure is now the only hope of stopping President Vladimir Putin from leading Russia back to the past, but the governments of the European Union don’t seem keen to exert such pressure. The EU-Russia summit on Friday, which comes after a particularly bleak period for human rights in Russia, is a test of the EU’s mettle. As a Russian working in human rights since the Soviet era, I am watching closely with hope that the EU will reverse years of speaking softly to Russia, and use a big stick.
[…]
European officials say they’d like to take strong positions, but that, well, they need the gas, so they have no leverage. I’m not offended, just baffled. No one questions the EU’s need to seek energy security. But the assumption that pursuing a robust human-rights policy would lead to the Kremlin shutting off the gas is facile. Avoiding high-level engagement on human-rights issues for so many years is no guarantee of energy security, and it has emboldened the government to become more authoritarian.
[…]
Finally, not raising human rights issues because of a perceived “lack of leverage” is just bad policy. It suggests that pursuing strong human-rights policies is something the EU does only with weak states, and that plays to the worst fear of the Russian political elite: that human rights is raised as a political gambit to weaken countries, rather than being a core principle of EU engagement.
The European Union, and especially Germany, which takes over the EU presidency in six weeks, are the actors that the Kremlin respects, needs, listens to. Not using that relationship to promote human rights is a terrible waste. And it would be a tragedy. Russian civil society has traditionally depended on pressure from the outside to convince the Kremlin that our concerns are important. Now that we have virtually no forum inside the country, now that the Kremlin is poised to stifle us, that outside pressure is needed not only to make us effective, but to ensure our very survival.
If not the EU, then who? - Opinion - International Herald Tribune
It seems as if we “Western people” are really all playing with the “double standards” that we Europeans always see in the US. Our moral values don’t seem to be so important that we support them everywhere…

Putins way to get rid of opposition: Kill them
November 21st, 2006He tried it with the current Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko, they had success with Anna Politkovskaya and now another case came public - they nearly had success with killing former KGB- and FSB- agent Alexander Litwinenko (who has asylum in Great Britain). After a poison- attack - assumedly with Thallium - he’s now close to death.
And Europe is from this dictatorship economically dependend and fears to say something…

The last protest of Europe’s racists
November 21st, 2006All this is just a campaign of the European nationalists and racists that fear an “foreign inflitration” (“Überfremdung” - the German “Not-word (Unwort) of the year” 1993) of Europe. But if they want or not: Turkey doesn’t need us, but we need them. Elsewise Europe has no authority left in the rest of the world and the “European Union” will over short or long just be a “white and christian” Union - which is completely against the laicistic and multi-ethnic idea that was always stressed when a new European institution was founded or strengthened.
So, let’s hope that this will be the last cry of the backwards turned nationalists and racists (in Germany this was not at least pushed by the CSU (as regional part of the CDU one of the German ruling parties (the other is the SPD) - C stands for christian)) - because otherwise Europe won’t have a future that is at least a bit as glorious as it’s past.
